Assignment for 12/20/07–NOT!

December 20, 2007

Why are you looking here for an assignment–you know that you don’t have one!

Instead of working on geometry, spend some time with your family:  watch a classic Disney movie together, play a board game or cards with your parents and siblings,  take a walk to Taughannock Falls with your grandparent.  Vacations are a time for recreation, and the word ‘recreation’ really means ‘to re-create’.  You need to take a break from your everyday worries, like school, and re-create your life a little.  So spend time with your friends being a little kid again.  Do something silly.  Do something for other people.  Each of these things will do so much towards re-creating you and refreshing you.  Put away the schoolbooks for a few days and get out and enjoy your life a bit more.

Have a safe, happy, and restful holiday vacation.

–Mr. J

Worksheet on solving systems of equations “Why did the ghost…”

Tomorrow:  more on parabolas and an overview of Thursday’s test.

Notes from 12/17

December 17, 2007

Thursday’s test will include some transformational questions; some on coordinate geometry from the past two weeks like slope, distance and midpoint, point-slope form of the equation, parallel/perpendicular lines, etc; a bit on parabolas; and also soving systems of equations.  There will be a page or two on the test devoted to each separate topic, but I may just mix them up to mix you up.

Don’t forget, there will be fudge(s) [What is the plural of 'fudge'?  Whatever it is, there will be several kinds] on Thursday, so don’t be tempted to start your vacation until you have taken  a piece or two plus your test!

And it’s not too late to request your favorite fudge flavor!

Do Student Study Guide 7.2 The Substitution Method #1-7 all.

Today’s assignment is a worksheet on solving systems of equations using substitution.   I was going to give you two worksheets, one on substitution and the other on parabolas, but decided to save the parabola worksheet for in class tomorrow.

Assignment for 12/14/07

Assignment for Friday, December 14, 2007

Due Monday, 12/17/07

Two worksheets:

Systems of Equations: Elimination Method #1-7 This is review from last year. Don’t forget to CHECK your solution. We will also review solving systems by graphing at solving by substitution next week. The answer to #1 is (-4, 2).

Graphing Quadratics: #1-5 This is new. Choose points for x, solve for y, then plot the point (x, y). Choose x = -2, -1, 0, 1, and 2. Answer the question at the bottom, too. (’a’ is the coefficient of the x-squared term.)
If we have a snow day on Monday I will try to post answers to the first worksheet here so that we don’t have to take the time to go over that in class on Tuesday.

One more thing:  bring your graphing calculator to classs–we will be using the calculator to study the quadratics.  (You are expected to have your graphing calculator with you to do the Math A Exam, so you will be expected to have yours with you as we prepare for the Exam.)
